The Influence of Films and Social Media

Administrator | Bahasa & Humaniora

Technological advancements have brought both positive and negative influences on society, indirectly fostering diverse views, opinions, and perspectives. Among the many forms of media that cover various information, films and social media stand out. In addition to serving as entertainment, these platforms address a wide array of issues, ranging from social and political to cultural topics. The influence of films and social media on individuals and society can be examined through several aspects, including social perception, behavior, and identity.

Films are one of the media that contain many social perceptions and various views on a particular issue. Research indicates that films are a powerful form of mass media, with significant long-term effects on audiences that extend beyond the immediate viewing experience. Films often portray versions of reality that can shape society's views on global issues. This influence is evident in the portrayal of characters and roles, which may reinforce or challenge societal stereotypes. Moreover, films can depict situations—whether in industries or communities in a "harsh" or "subtle" manner, which can create various societal perspectives.  Consequently, films can serve as instruments for raising awareness about social issues, but they also carry the risk of promoting narrow viewpoints if misinterpreted or misused.

Likewise, social media plays a crucial role in shaping individual behavior. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter facilitate the rapid dissemination of information, often influencing individual decisions in daily life, from fashion trends and lifestyle choices to political views. Frequently, the spread of hoaxes occurs, leading people to engage in matters whose truth is uncertain. Through these major platforms, many people tend to prioritize what is popular and easily accepted by communities or others. This can unintentionally establish new norms, practices, and rules that can be positive or negative.

Both films and social media have a significant impact on the formation of individual identities and worldviews. In films, characters often serve as role models, especially for teenagers who are in the process of discovering their identities. They may emulate the way these characters dress, act, speak, and behave in facing problems, following the example of the characters or actors they admire. On social media, individuals have the freedom to express themselves publicly, enabling them to express themselves freely in their own way and build an identity that can be recognized by society. However, the identity displayed and formed on social media is sometimes influenced by the need for validation and acceptance from the broader public, which can create psychological pressure when individuals feel they must meet high societal standards.

In conclusion, films and social media wield considerable influence in shaping behavior, worldviews, and identity. Although these two major media offer much freedom of expression, they should also be approached with caution. As consumers of media, we must be discerning and thoughtful in how we engage with these forms of media, considering the broader impact on ourselves and society
